About Enrichment Classes

Red River Enrichment Classes meets in Gainesville for two semester per year: a Spring semester (January-April) and a Fall Semester (September - November). Each semester is 10 weeks. All classes take place on Fridays.

Goal - The goal of Enrichment Classes is to enrich the lives of our children through classes taught in a group setting by parent/teachers willing to volunteer their time to share of their knowledge in a particular subject area.  The key to success is cooperation.  At least one parent from each family is expected to be involved and on the premises during the time his/her children are in class.

Description - Red River Enrichment Classes is a cooperative teaching and learning experience for home schooling families in the surrounding area.  Parents teach a variety of classes on Fridays to small groups of home-schooled children. Children of all ages are welcome to attend, providing there are openings in his/her grade level. School aged children are divided as follows; K-1st grade, 2nd -3rd grade, 4th -6th grade, 7th-8th grade, 9th-12th grade.  Classes are taught from a Christian perspective (no New Age ideas, evolution, humanism, etc.), but in deference to others’ religious beliefs, denominational doctrine is not taught.

Current Class Schedule: Each semester brings a new variety of classes for each age group. All classes are volunteered by our parents, and are unique and exciting! To get an idea of what may be offered, you may request a copy of a past or current schedule. New class schedules are released about 2-4 weeks before Registration.

Interested in joining Enrichment Classes? We look forward to having you as a part of our group.

How to Apply for Membership in Red River Enrichment Classes

  1. Read the Admission Policy
  2. Print, fill in, and mail the Application Form and have the Reference Form completed (be sure to include the $18.95 per parent payment for background checks)
Application Form
Applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis. You will be notified by email of your acceptance into the program and will be given the current class schedule and information.

A Board Member will hold your application until time to fill any openings that our classes have for the upcoming semester. At that time, a Board Member will telephone or email you

• To extend you an invitation to join us or

• To ask if you would like to wait to join us at a later time if we don’t have any openings for the upcoming semester.

ADMISSION POLICY

New membership is limited and applications will be accepted based upon class availability. We will continue to take applications for the waiting list if the membership limit is reached.

To keep EC a manageable size, we do have some requirements. Membership is open to all families home educating at least one child who will be 5 years old AND in Kindergarten or above during the current academic year. Nursery and preschool classes are reserved for their younger siblings.

Under no circumstances will a student who has been removed from public or private school because of behavior or discipline problems be permitted to attend EC. If discovery is made after registration, the student will be removed from EC automatically.

EC is neither a substitute for nor an alternative to schooling at home. The program will facilitate the educational process to a high degree and relieve burdens, but it does not replace parents' responsibilities in the process. In fact, your participation and supervision will be integral to your child's success at EC.

 Background Checks

In an effort to protect our children, we require that all new parents (both Mom and Dad) submit to a background check prior to acceptance. Since we all benefit equally from this policy, we ask that each person pay for his or her own. Nationwide criminal searches are conducted through Criminal Watchdog.

Additionally, any adult who might replace you on the premises in your absence must have a background check conducted prior to their visit (Grandma, grown son or daughter, etc.).

Grade levels - As parents, we are aware of our children's social and academic abilities, but teachers are familiar with the levels of the courses. Posted grade limits give an idea of the level to which the class will be geared. We request that students not be more than two years below or above their grade peers in age.

Special Needs - Because most parents are not equipped to teach children with severe disabilities or maintain discipline in a class with special needs children, please prayerfully consider if co-op fits your special needs child. It may be necessary for the parent of any child to be assigned as a teacher or helper in some or all of the child's classes.

Why do we have such strict admission rules?

The longevity of EC and the positive impact it has on families’ lives is due to the grace of God and the hard and selfless work of all of our volunteer parents. Having families drop out after registration causes holes in our organization and causes a strain on the rest of the group. Our goal is to enrich the lives of homeschoolers, not to cause stress.

If you withdraw from EC before or during the semester, then your jobs (either as cleaner or teacher or as helper) will remain open for the semester unless they are covered by another volunteer member of EC. If you are scheduled to teach a class, then that class will have to be cancelled or taken over by another mom who should not have to take on additional responsibilities over and above her other EC responsibilities. If you are scheduled as a cleaner for the semester, then your cleaning team will be short one person for the entire ten weeks of the semester if you drop out before the final week of the semester. These cleaning crews should not be penalized by having to do more than their share of work because of your absence. EC students should not be penalized by having their class cancelled at the last minute because of your absence.

Please strongly consider your ability to fulfill your commitment to our group BEFORE accepting an invitation to join our membership.

It is our strongest desire to support Christian homeschoolers in all aspects of their development, but the good of the program remains the principle responsibility and the primary concern of the Board Members.

By enrolling your children, you are committing to EC for the entire semester, so we ask you to consider your decision prayerfully before joining. Your attendance and punctuality are crucial because we depend on one another for a successful year. When even one parent is late or absent or quits, it puts a heavier burden on the rest of us, and consequently, the children suffer.

Therefore, if you already know that you may miss three or more Fridays per semester due to vacations or prior commitments, please do not join our program as you and your children will already miss a full quarter of classes, not including possible illnesses. We understand that illnesses and emergencies occur unexpectedly, and we do not want anyone who may be sick to attend, but we also respect the time and effort that instructors put into their classes each week. They deserve the mutual respect of having their helpers and students present in class and on time, barring unforeseen situations and illnesses. Because children look to their parents to set examples and take them to co-op, we ask parents to remember their own commitment and make punctual attendance a priority. Please schedule appointments and vacations accordingly, secure substitutes when you are absent for any reason, and leave your home in plenty of time to be punctual each week.

Fees - Registration per semester is currently $40 per family. $25 of this is paid to our host church for the use of their facility. The remaining $15 covers administrative costs.  No one in EC receives any compensation for their services.

Additionally, there is a one-time background check fee of $18.95 per parent (Mom and Dad).

If you withdraw from EC at any point after Registration, you will forfeit your $40 Registration Fee. If you withdraw one month before the first day of classes, you will also forfeit your class fees, as these will already be paid to the teachers.

Teaching - Once your family has attended for one full semester, we invite you to teach classes. This is not required, but it does have its benefits (early registration, not being on the cleaning crew, etc.). Announcements about class submissions will be made during the semester.

Red River Enrichment Classes welcomes you to our group. We look forward to meeting you!

If you have any questions about this information, do not hesitate to contact a Board Member at redriverenrichmentclasses@gmail.com.

Class Ideas for EC

Sometimes you want to teach, but you have no idea WHAT to teach! It happens to everyone from time to time. So, here are a few suggestions...and maybe these will take you on rabbit trails to more ideas! Click here to download a blank form for a Class Descriptions.
Check back often to see additional ideas!
Magic Tree House Grades 2-3 or 4-6 Assign one book to be read each week at home, and then discuss the topic in class (dinosaurs, mummies, tornadoes, etc.). Magictreehouse.com has an entire section for teachers with free printable activities and teacher notes for every book.
Magic School Bus Grades K-1 or 2-3 Easy and fun science activities can be adapted from the books or video episodes. The Scholastic website has great links to go with all the topics (bats, gravity, oceans, and more) and there are easy science experiments in the back of each book.

Home Economics is a lost art, or is it? Keep it alive with a basic skills class for high schoolers. This Pinterest board has a few links to start, or go with a program like Keepers at Home.

Unit Studies on any topic are easily adapted to Enrichment Classes. Homeschool Share has an extensive list of Unit Study topics listed by age, from Preschool to High School!

Birds are fun for any age. Here are some links to all sorts of fun bird learning activities.
Crafts are always popular. Need some ideas? Here are plenty for the high school age. Make something new every week and even use them for gifts!

Preschool classes take a certain special kind of teacher! If this is your crowd, and you just need some inspiration, look no further than these links!

The ideas are endless. Read this article for more.

Save those empty ink cartridges!

Red River Enrichment Classes has joined the Worklife Rewards program with Office Depot. This program allows us to recycle 10 empty printer ink cartridges each month for Office Depot reward of $2 each. We use this money to pay for copies and supplies (class descriptions, handbooks, nametags, etc.)

So, please save your ink cartridges and bring them to EC for recycling, and help EC at the same time!

Enrichment Class Outlines

In January 2012, Red River Enrichment Classes celebrated its 12th year! We are so excited about what God has done for us, and look forward to the future.

As we grow, the need for increased structure and accountability increases. To that end, EC teachers will now submit a Class Outline Form with each class proposal. This additional information will not be included in class descriptions printed for distribution, but the form will be kept on file.

The Class Outline Form will afford teachers an opportunity to consider class goals and material in advance. This is a good thing! The goal is not to increase anyone’s burden, but rather to benefit teachers, parents and the board as we work together to bless the children we’re so privileged to instruct.

Classes will not be considered without this form.

Examples follow below. You’ll notice that some classes (Games! & etc.) lend themselves to a very informal format, while more academic classes call for a bit more structure.

If you have any questions about this form or classes in general, please contact an EC Board Member. To download a Class Description Form, click here.

Sincerely,

Nicki Truesdell
Dainah Blalock
Nichole Hackney

Sample Class Schedule

Below you will find the complete class schedule for Red River Enrichment Classes Fall 2014 semester. Each semester the choices change, but they are always varied and exciting!

This is just a sample of what our schedule looks like.

The amazing thing about our program is that classes are always submitted by volunteer parents on a variety of topics and grade levels. The Board issues a call for classes mid-semester, parents submit their class descriptions, and it all falls together into a unique schedule! EC parents are always surprising the Board with their talent and knowledge!

Enrichment Classes - Basic Guidelines

For general info on Enrichment Classes, click here.

Now we get down to the nitty-gritty! Before you join EC, you might want to be sure that it's for you. Here are some basics. (When you register for your first semester of EC, you will receive the EC Handbook, with the rules of operation. All of this information is discussed in detail at Orientation, .)

Supplies

All students are required to come to EC with basic supplies. They are:

 Nursery SuppliesBackpack/diaper bag

Diapers, wipes, cup/bottle and change of clothes (LABELED with baby’s name)

Basic Class Kit - 3rd grade and under

Pencil

Scissors

Jumbo Glue Stick (or 2 regular glue sticks)

Crayons

Basic Class Kit - 4th grade -12th

Pencil & Pen

spiral notebook or notebook paper

Cleaning Crew

Our cleaning crew is made up of non-teachers. As a new participant, you will be included in this crew. Here’s how it works:

There are approximately 7 different cleaning jobs that must be performed each Friday after the last class ends (at 2:30). Jobs are divided evenly among the crew. These jobs are very basic and include cleaning classrooms (vacuuming, sweeping, and garbage cans), restrooms (wiping down counters, cleaning mirrors, cleaning floors), and cleaning the gym and entry. Each job takes 30-45 minutes to perform. You will be assigned to clean approximately 5-7 times during the semester.

After registration, the cleaning schedule is made with all assignments. You will know in advance the dates you are scheduled to clean. A walk-through of the cleaning process will take place during Orientation to familiarize all new families.

This is an important part of Enrichment Classes, as we have an agreement with our host church that we will leave the premises clean each Friday afternoon. Please be sure you are able to commit to this before registering for Enrichment Classes.

(You will have the opportunity to teach classes after one full semester with EC; teachers do not work on the cleaning crew.)

Dress Code

Our dress code applies to 4th grade and older (boys, girls, and adults).

We believe modesty is appropriate for this setting, and since we have many people with different views of modesty we will spell out what acceptable for Red River Enrichment Classes.  If you bring visitors, please be sure they are aware of these guidelines as well.
1. Shorts, skirts, skorts, and dresses must be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee while sitting.

2. No skin tight clothing, midriffs (tummy showing), see through clothing, tank tops, halters, fish net tops, plunging necklines, underwear showing (bras or otherwise) or clothing that advertises immoral items or acts.  If they show, the clothes are not appropriate.

3. No facial piercings or visible tattoos.

Anyone not dressed in accordance with these guidelines will be asked to go home and change.

All participants from 4th grade to adult will be required to sign the Dress Code Agreement before participating in EC.

For all questions regarding Enrichment Classes, email a Board Member at redriverenrichmentclasses@gmail.com.

What to do if EC is cancelled

Missing EC due to bad weather is such a disappointment to so many. Here are some things you can do to turn those frowns upside down!

1. Have everyone in your house wear a nametag.

2. Have school, but move to a different room of the house every 50 minutes.

3. Ring a bell when it's time to change classes.

4. Eat lunch on the floor with a blanket. Make sure at least one child cries and another spills their drink so you'll get the full effect.

5. Play "I lost my backpack."

6. At the end of the school day, stack the chairs on top of the kitchen table.

7. Mill around in the driveway talking about what you want to do "after school."

8. If the weather permits, go to Braum's or Taco Casa for a treat!

How to Get Ready for EC

This is a tongue-in-cheek look at how Enrichment Class preparation can look in some households.

For homeschooling families, a day away from home at classes can be exhausting. Here are some nuggets of wisdom from a 10 year veteran of EC.

1. Wait until Monday of the first week of EC to prepare your class supplies. It's even better if you wait until the night before. This ensures that you will go to sleep seeing visions of your lesson plan and you'll be well-versed in your subject for class the next day.

2. Stay up as late as possible on Thursday night. Midnight or later is preferable. This shows true dedication.

3. Assemble various junk foods around you as you cut, glue, type, copy, stack, and pack your supplies. This will give you a quick rush of energy, and then you'll have that crash you need to fall into bed later.

4. Get up 4 hours before you're supposed to be at EC. This will come in handy when you remember a few last-minute preparations, like typing supply lists, stuffing sacks, etc., while dressing and feeding your children.

5. Don't make your bed before you leave. You'll want it nap-ready this afternoon!

6. Save make-up application for the drive to EC. You want your look to be as fresh as possible when you get there, while giving the other moms the impression that you've got it all under control.

7. Stuff various snack foods in your purse to inhale as you run down the hall to your first class.

8. Give thanks to God that you had the good sense to at least put some food in the crock pot for dinner, because, MAN you're gonna need it!

9. Make mental notes during the day of all the contacts you need to make, stuff you should've packed, and lessons to plan for next week. Promptly forget them.

10. Do it all again next week!

10 Ways to Come Up with an Class Idea for EC

If you want to teach a class at EC next semester (and you've attended at least one semester) it's almost time to turn in your class descriptions. Some of you may have LOTS of ideas, and some of you may be drawing a blank. So here are some suggestions to get you started:

1. Pray! God may be wanting to use you in a special way through EC.

2. Ask your kids! Teaching on one of their favorite topics can be very easy; you probably have lots of resources already. (This is how I came up with my Dinosaurs class.)

2. Use a unit study. These can range anywhere from dogs to space travel to the Constitution to India. You can use a made-to-order study or design your own.

3. Ask a board member what's been popular before. Usually fun science classes, physical activities (dance, sports, etc.) and arts and crafts are popular, but there are so many options that kids have absolutely loved.

4. Teach Preschool. If you want to teach, but you don't want to do a lot of extra study, teach preschoolers. They are happy with just about ANYTHING, and their studies are so basic. Science can be about pets or trees, and math can be counting and number games.

5. Use YOUR gifts. Do you love to crochet? Teach it! Do you love poetry? Teach it! Are you knowledgeable about nutrition? Share it!

6. Expand your homeschool. If you're doing something interesting at home, turn it into an EC class. This cuts down on the extra preparation time, because you're already teaching it.

7. Pick one of your favorite books and go with it! (I love Lord of the Rings, so I taught it. It turned out to be a huge hit!)

8. Use the season, nearest holidays, or an election to work with. Christmas crafts, Pilgrims, or the political process work great in the Fall. Gardenting, or the Life of Jesus in the Spring.

9. Think of what you wish you could teach your kid at home, but honestly know it will not happen... like "kids in the kitchen" (if you are the type who cook solo) or math facts- like i really care about those??? But i know I have to teach them to my offspring, so might as well make it a party with snacks so they can count and all!

10. Think back to some of your kids' favorite classes in the past. Could YOU teach it? Probably!

Think of what you love- what are your passions. What are your gifts. Each one of us is really built/ programmed for something. Are you a server, a prayer warrior, a worker, a teacher? Of course we are all teachers, but some really have the gift - others operate in a grace gift and it is not really their love. Work to your own skills. Don't work against yourself putting yourself in a bind each and every Friday.

Never assume a class idea is not going to be popular. Throw it out there & let the board hash out the details. Show yourself ready to teach, willing to change a bit and most importantly honor the LORD!

See a board member for more info, and get the classes turned in EARLY!

Meet Kari: Part 3

What about "EC" (Enrichment Classes)?

What made you begin Enrichment classes?

When Liberty was 4 we heard about Enrichment Classes in Sherman. I had never heard of that before. We called, got in and started. We both fell in love with the classes and I with the concept. I felt like this was the thing that was missing with Jessie and Hiedi's homeschool experience. One day during orientation the EC director, Karen Tooley, announced that she would like for someone to consider starting another EC group. Their group had gotten so big, they were limited on space and their waiting list about 23 families long. She thought if another got started it would help that situation. Well, I took up the idea since I didn't like driving to Sherman each week. I thought it would be nice to start one closer to home. I talked to Karen, she helped me with all the details of setting up our own Enrichment Class and the rest is, as they say, history. The Sherman group was so organized that it made the whole process of starting up our own classes fairly easy. The Sherman group had 3 board members so I thought we should have 3 board members. The first three were Nicki Truesdell , Maggie VanDolah and myself.

What is your favorite thing about EC?

The camaraderie between all the kids. I love that they have a 'school group' that they are a part of. School is a major part of growing up and I think EC is just an added benefit that gives kids something to belong to academically. I have observed over the years that some children don't take their school work as seriously as their parents might like for them to and EC offers a little academic competition and accountability with their peers that helps them see for themselves that they need to step it up. I love my children being exposed to other adults that have something to offer my kids that I can not. I always use Dainah Blalock as an example. She is a wonderful mentor to my daughter in the area of writing. I love that there are classes offered that I just could not offer at home, like Color guard, drama, etc. There are also classes, like history or literature that we do offer at home but the added dimension of a group discussion enhances the study so much. And I can not leave out the fellowship the moms enjoy. There is so much to be gained from so many of the moms and dads that attend EC. I just love our group so much!

What have been some of the challenges with being the leader of this group?

I am sure they are the same challenges that are common to anyone in leadership. I have to continue to go to the Lord and ask Him for wisdom.

If there are any changes you could make for EC what would it be?

I would love for our program to be 5 hours instead of 4. It is not an option for us because of the availability of the church. The other change would be to build or buy our own facility suited to meet the needs of our homeschool community at large.

Kari, I have really enjoyed working on this online interview with you. Thank you so much for sharing with us. You are a wonderful Christan, mother, homeschool parent & friend. You & your family are an inspiration & our EC group is privileged to have you. THANK YOU!!
