Bois D'arc the Magazine

Dry old history takes a powder in Bois d’Arc, the Magazine.

Written by home school students and published by Red River Christian Home School, Bois d’Arc is a treasure trove of oral histories, feature stories, vintage photographs and recipes gathered from the senior citizens of Cooke and Grayson counties and the surrounding environs.

The 2008-09 edition of Bois d’Arc pays tribute to the warriors and war brides of World War II. Included are an oral history by Whitesboro’s Charles Baum, who survived the Bataan Death March and interment in Japanese POW camps; features with Kingsley Dowling of Gainesville, who fought in the Battle of Okinawa, and Norm Wimberley of Whitesboro, who saw action at Tarawa, Saipan and Guadal Canal; tales from the Fabulous Fabians; and interviews with war brides Betty Brooks Roane and Wilma Chapman Leach. Other highlights in this 84-page issue include tales of Spanish gold and farm life, recollections of old Whitesboro and old Valley View, a taste of Hollywood, collected old sayings and recipes, the story of the Morton Museum, and an oral history with 104-year-young Virginia Holland Melugin.

Also available is the 2007 edition of Bois d’Arc. This 76-page collection includes an oral history by Essie Sullivan Morrow, who at age 107 was the oldest living person in Cooke County at the time of her interview. Wedding stories, hunting lore, tall tales and a recipe collection also are featured in this first edition.
